Possibly the best player of the 19th century and certainly the best catcher of that era. Very highly regarded during his career, and for many years after his retirement. Its very difficult to compare players from that Jurassic era of baseball to more modern players, but it is clear that Ewing was truly great, and certainly belongs high on this list.

19th century player regarded by many witnesses and writers as the greatest all-around everday player of the time. Like a lot of players back then, such as his contemporary King Kelly, he played many positions. Hard to say how great he really was, as the quality of play wasn't as good back then due to many factors, too many to list really, but certainly a force in his own time.
