This is hardly low class. There was a time when young men actually worked on their cars, as a hobby, and were proud of their "Ford Mustang" or Chevy. Actually driving a Honda Accord or Toyota and not having the vaguest clue how the car runs would seem a lot lower on the intellectual scale.

I believe that this is something which is a trait of youth and not so much an advertisement of someone being lower or working class. I see some pretty mindless accusations among the younger crowd in various automotive chat rooms and these days I can't stand to even be part of a group that spouts such nonsense. I have owned a 1965 Mustang hot rod since 1976 and during the early days of ownership I made my share of jokes, comments, and the occasional stoplight Grand Prix concerning the competition. But as I got older, the cars became classics and parts became expensive, so a long time ago I banded together with my GM and Mopar friends, as they have banded with me, to help each other maintain and repair our cars. I'm now a member of a car club and these days I am happy to see a fully restored or well maintained original Barracuda, Chevelle, Chevy II box Nova, or Mercury Comet Cyclone because I know the love, care, time, effort, and money that has been put into them. If I can help out a friend with a hard to find part or come to the aid of someone who needs assistance turning wrenches it doesn't matter if it's a Ford 289, a Chrysler 273, or a Chevy 283, I've worked on them all and I get a sense of satisfaction helping a fellow enthusiast solve a problem or perform a modification regardless of the make or model. These days we see it as being more important to keep the cars and the sport of hot rodding alive and well, so I'll leave the "Ford sucks" and "Chevy sucks" jargon to the younger set who may eventually join my friends and I when they get their baseless arguments out of their system and grow up a bit.
