Yet more of that Yankees "mystique"--and arrogance.

Eyewitness accounts, newspaper accounts & footage make it clear this never happened. Great player, big homers...no moment.

If he didn't hit the homer, we all would be angry at him.

It would be a five for great baseball legends but not for actually happening- which it didn't. The grainy film clearly shows Babe pointing toward the bench then the pitcher not toward center like the legend proclaims. But it's Babe so I'll give the legend an extra star for the hell of it- and actually putting it in the seats nonetheless after talking trash.

4.33?! That's a bunch of crap.

How could this be #1?? It didnt even actually happen!

He didn't call his shot. He pointed to the fans and the taunting Cub players. Charlie Root, who pitched to him, said that Babe would've been plunked in the @ss if he pointed to center.

This was a great moment if it did happen. But who knows if it really happened, it's just a legend, hasn't been proven.

the great bambino...i hate the yankees but you have to respect the legend the hold..calling the shot is a tradition that everyone knows of that don't even know about it...hell that might have not made sense..but think about it kids nowadays don't really know that when they point downfield..hmm where am i going with this well i already typed somethin might as well submit it

Cocky, arogant, fantastic. UPDATE: Thanks for clarifying what he was really up to, Ralph. But where was the beer guy so he could wash them down?

Did he or did he not call his shot? Perhaps the great allure of this moment is that it cannot and will never be fully determined. There is proof from both sides, but the bottom line is that Babe Ruth punctuated his status as the greatest American sports legend with the fabled 'called shot'. And whether it happened or not, it is the stuff of which dreams are made of.

The greatest ever to put on a pair of cleats. No player since can hold a candle to the Babe. The ball was more like a rock than today's tennis balls, the bats were thick handled, not scientifically machined, like today. He grabbed a bat and dominated his sport like nobody else. Not many guys call their shot, a home run, in a World Series game. Not many guys even get there.
