Sokoto is located in the Northwest region of Nigeria on the Sokoto River. Sokoto is a noted commercial center in Nigeria, a collection place for hides, skins, and peanuts. Sokoto is also noted for its cement, pottery, and leather tanning industries. Founded in 1809 by Usuman dan Fodio, Sokoto became the capital of a vast Muslim empire in Northern Nigeria. The empire ended in 1903 with Sokoto falling to the British. Sokoto is a noted pilgrimage destination for many Muslims due to its tombs and shrines dedicated to many Muslin leaders. The estimated population of Sokoto is 525,000 people.
