This place is down in the Loop and is where many people go who stay in that location. It has good German food and beer.

I do not care for german food. But there is always a huge line of people waiting outside this joint. It is apparently the thing to do when people come to Chi -- go to the Berghoff.

The food and beer were good. I didn't feel particularly rushed, but then again, I live in Manhattan. Had quite a few meals here and was never disappointed.

I enjoyed the German fare here though, as others have said, you are really rushed in and out. I had nearly forgotten about the "no women in the bar thing" they clung to for so long. I have a hard time dealing with anyone being excluded from anything for any reason - and, let's face it just because they now "allow" women doesn't mean it should ever have happened in the first place. This knocks them down to 3 stars in my book.

Food is good enough, but service in the dining room tends to be rushed - want you in and out! Crowded tables - not a place for an intimate conversation. The sandwiches in the stand-up bar are very good. The bar reminded me of Locke-Ober's in Boston, until they allowed entry to women. Locke-Ober finally did, too.

This is an institution. The food is solid, but bland. This is a good place for lunch because they are fast. Lunch in the stand-up bar (which had banned women until the 1980s) is a bit different.

It's old school. Got to eat here at least once.
