As a player, he was merely kind of the 1880's version of say Rick Manning- a good fielding outfielder with a pretty weak bat. As a manager, he oversaw the transformation of the old Orioles from a lousy franchise to a powerhouse, and later led some of the same guys to pennants in Brooklyn before managing a bad Reds team. Like his contemporary Frank Selee of the Braves and Cubs, one of the best early managers, later inducted into the Hall years after he should've been. 4.5

One of the greatest managers of all time, far ahead of his time in dominating the NL with the Orioles in the 1890s.
