Fusion does seem to have a lot of potential. In reality we are already using fusion as an energy source every day, ever hear of the sun? It uses nuclear fusion to convert hydrogen into helium.
But the real topic here, of course, is human controlled fusion. We can create fusion reactions, the problem right now is that it requires way more energy to create a fusion reaction than it gives off. So until we find a way to create a controlled and sustainable chain reaction type of fusion, nuclear fusion as a viable energy source remains science fiction.
