Overall Rating: 4.40 based on 5 ratings
Certain stores, most likely 5 & 10 cent stores, had machines where customers brought TV tubes to be tested. If one was no good, a replaccement could be bought right there. (Add picture)

Speaking of tubes, although it's highly debated, in S's opinion, you can't be the sound of a tubed amp for bluesy-jazzy tones...

UPDATE: Oh yes, you can BE the sound...but you can't BEAT the sound of one of those old 50's and 60's massive tubed wonders (Fender, Vox, etc.)

Sort of. I do recall seeing tubes in the back of the set when the TV repair guy was trying to fix it...hey, I had a vested interest in the inner workings of the idiot box - how else was I supposed to keep up with the other Boomers. I have the feeling that the testing machines may have been there to convince you that you needed to buy new tubes regardless. Either that or it was a Communist plot to sterilize do-it-yourself TV repairmen.

I remember that, but just barely. You were really moving up if you got a Solid State television.

I can remember my dad buying tubes for an old black and white TV back when things were designed with the consumer in mind. Then you could fix something without taking out a second mortgage on your home because today everyone must be a specialist with a "specialist tool" to fix just about anything.
