 | lmorovan (12) 05/22/2008 | A child could use a cell phone when going outdoor for safety purpose. But cell phones should be banned in schools. They ad more distraction than necessary in an environment where they should concentrate on the education.

 | twansalem (36) 05/22/2008 | Have you ever been to the mall on a Friday evening or Saturday afternoon and took a good look around? There are 14 year old talking on cell phones all over the place. Don't parents have the ability to stand up to their own children anymore? There's no reason for a kid to have a cell phone before high school (or when they're in high school, for that matter). For one thing, they are too expensive. Either their parents are paying for them, or if the kids are a little older, they might be paying for them with their own money which they should be saving for college, or maybe a car or computer.
And for those who want their kids to have a cell phone for safety purposes, their are good alternatives to standard cell phones . They do make cell phones that only allow the kid to make phone calls to pre-approved phone numbers. So as a parent, you can set up a few emergency phone numbers, but the kids can't use it to call their friends.

 | famw (5) 01/14/2006 | It depends on the situation to me. Sometimes single Moms want to know where their children are when they are at work. They need to know where they are so they can pick them up. But then again, if the kid has a quarter or some change in his pocket, there are phones all of the place. But then again, many of them are vandalized on a regular basis anymore. As for high schoolers with cell phones, I think they should be checked at the door and then given back at the end of the day. Many are not responsible enough to have them and are not needed during the school day. And that goes for the kids not in high school, too.

 | daedalus (33) 01/14/2006 | Angel's right on the money. What changes in high school that says they should have a cell phone then? As long as they are paying for it and it is not a distraction at school (which is unlikely) let them have it. But just to get them a phone once they enter high school, just on principle, is silly too.

 | CherrySoda99 (29) 12/02/2005 | It's true. No child needs their OWN ceel phone before high school. Personally, I don't see the point of people having cell phones DURING high school. What's the point? To call for a drive home on your free? Call to ask if you can stay late and do something? Those are ligitament reasons. But, calling your boyfriend/girlfriend to ask how much they missed you since last class is a waste of your time.

 | Twitchin' Monkey (14) 12/01/2005 | i didn't get one untill i was driving. and THEN it was for emergencies. what kind of emergency is a 12 year old going to get into where there's not an adult present? kids are smart. they can get attention in an emergency without the bling phone.

 | Gentle Jude (23) 11/29/2005 | I agree because children who have cell phones will have a 12 going on 21 syndrome. There is a certain amount of power with having a cell phone and a child should not have that type of responsibility. Plus it will teach them bad habits because mobiles are a lot more expensive to use. But I can see the point of children having them so that parents can rescue them or know their ware abouts. I would feel more secure too if I was a parent knowing my child had a mobile. This privilege of having the phone however should only be given to responsible children, not the sort who are irresponsible eg talk for hours on the phone when their parents only allocated eg half an hour.

 | frogio (47) 11/28/2005 | Who the hell is a 10 yr old going to call anyway? His therapist? Kid's don't need cell phones. They need one-on-one social interactions away from TV's and computers. I also agree with spanishgonzo...I don't buy into the "emergency" crap either. Kids have always made it through life without a technological crutch, so parents shouldn't be sucked into the $99.99-a-month-to-feel-secure rubbish.

 | SpecialboothvicJr. (10) 11/20/2005 | no, because if a kid is in an emergency and there's no ;phone to use, how will they be able to tell their parents?!

 | zuchinibut (36) 11/14/2005 | I agree. Younger children don't have the responsibilities that necesitate having a cell phone. It is annoying to me to see so many young children with cells these days. It might be old fashioned, but I don't think children need them while they are growing up.

 | Molfan (57) 11/13/2005 | unless it is for an emergency where they need to get ahold of a parent. I agree. otherwise it is yet another toy some spoiled brat gets.like the 13 year old little diva girl across the street who gets whatever she wants{ and gets away with whatever she wants}usually some weak parent who is afraid to tell their kid no. No one in our family has a cell phone yet. If we did get one it would be for emergencies.

 | scarletfeather (47) 11/12/2005 | I tend to agree with this. A 12 or 13 year old kid would use a cell phone to make prank calls or for other such mischief. But once a kid reaches high school age, I think a cell phone is a good idea, in case of car trouble, or in case he's in a situation that requires a parent to come to the rescue.

 | kamylienne (77) 11/12/2005 | No one really "needs" a cell phone, unless for your job you're on call for most/all of the day (ex.: a surgeon or something). But, when I do (eventually) have a kid, I'd feel more comfortable if they had one when they start driving, in case they break down somewhere (I'll beat them over the head with it if they use it WHILE driving, though).

 | CanadaSucks (45) 11/12/2005 | No one needs a cell phone in high school. . .then again, kids' literacy levels are at an all-time low. . .all they can do is communicate with each other. . .

 | SZinHonshu (44) 11/11/2005 | I will extend this assertion and say that around 60% of the people who have cell phones in America don't need them.
Have you ever listened (how could you not considering the volumes people feel free to use when blabbing away in public) to the caliber or content of some of the conversations you are forced to endure while standing in lines at banks or coffee shops? Commonly it is just mindless blather. The chattering of people of who are too shallow or insecure to be left alone with their own thoughts and enjoy an opportunity to reflect upon something.
