 | EschewObfuscation (61) 06/01/2005 | Ike had enormous moral authority, having engineered victory over Germany, Italy and Japan in World War II. Both parties wooed him to be their candidate for President, he chose to become a republican and run on their ticket, although, at the time, there was very little true distinction between the ideologies of the two parties, as a result of the single-mindedness that had evolved out of the post-war relief efforts and diplomacy. There was almost no question that he would follow Harry Truman as President, his resume so overwhelmingly strong. His confident, grandfatherly demeanor put the country at ease with whatever policy he put forth and other than the press's growing hatred for his Vice-President, the country enjoyed a period of seeming peace under his quiet leadership.
