The 2.5 hour war epic as the equivalent of 'Titanic' or 'Armaggedon'. An interminable and dramatically pointless romantic relationship between insipid protagonists - with a no-talent cast, at that - as a pretext to reconstruct a historic moment - or vice-versa. So long as filmmakers cannot get ahold of competent screenwriters to come up with intelligent dialogues, insteresting characters and original situations, developing a History Channel documentary would be much better advised.

Does not belong here. Was accurate in so far as depicting the horrors of war and that a lot of good men died that fateful day. As for the fictional love story on top of the history, the movie played it as counterpoint to history, not as the end all and be all of the film. I think IJR missed some parts when he watched it last. Slow down and watch it twice if you need to. :) Anyways, I would highly recommend this film to those wanting to know a little about what their granddad did in the Second War to End All Wars.

The battle scenes are great. The rest is just stinkum. If you know when the battle scenes are coming up, then you can come back from your smoking break, bathroom break, shooting the breeze break etc.
