Personally, I don't think I'll lay America's interventionist foreign policy at the dorrstep of the Brits.Contrary to what some history revisionists would have you believe, this is in fact our mother country.I see nothing but benefits from a friendship here.

Since our "diplomatic revolution" after the War of 1812, this relationship has been the most important in USA history. Generally it was helpful until WWI. Our entry there was purely gratuitous and based on Wilson's whim. We went in to help pull Britain's chestnuts out of the fire.Maybe, enough is enough!

Friendship with any country - as long as it's genuine - seems like a move in a positive direction. All things considered - I trust them as much or more than most.

This goes back to WW2. A GREAT country, and strong ally

I'd say friendship with Britain is more helpful than hurtful, especially since we have pretty much all of the Middle East against America, no telling what they're going to do, so I would say right off hand we need all the friends we can get.

Maybe the UK's friendship with the US is more harmful to them-maybe?

Given my Irish heritage, I'd have to say that friendship with Britain is a dubious concept at best.

I've never been to Britain but they have been a great ally. Thanks GB

I've met them a time or two, they seem nice enough.

Nuke 'em...that'd surprise them!

I find it ironic that the same nation whom we revolted against by revolution would turn out to be one of our strongest allies. This alliance probably has much to do with our shared cultural, legal, and linguistic traditions, along with shared political and economic interests. Indeed, it could be fairly stated that our republic wouldn't exist without the legal heritage that the British passed down to us through the common law. In particular, its emphasis on checks and balances and some individual rights has been very beneficial to the development of the United States. So yes, I would say that there have been some definite benefits to this relationship.

Only natural, common language, generally the same culture, outlook on life. Britian is a decent, civilized country, of course there our closest ally

I like the expression that the Brits and the US are two countries separated by the same language.

Ever since the War of 1812 our friendship with Britain has been pretty much all positive. There have been times in fact when Britain was our only real ally.. like now? The British may not feel quite so positive about the relationship, however, since our government (various administrations) tends to bully even our friends. The scene from 'Love Actually' where the British PM stands up to the lecherous American President is telling, I think. They appreciate our friendship but they've grown weary of being treated like the lesser of two equals in our partnership. Shared history, laws, culture (music, literature etc.) probably guarantee that we'll always be friends. But we should take care to appreciate them more and not attempt to dictate to them.

Not just with Britain, but what about the rest of the world? As GWB and Blair are learning the hard way, no man is an Island.
SZinHonshu 11/17/2005
Our most trusted ally. The Brits seem largely unhappy with Tony Blair. I don't know about you guys, but I'd have voted for Blair (easily) if given the choice between him, GWB and Kerry. If the UK doesn't want him, I sure do!
