In the corporate world, this is the place men get to show some individuality. There isn't much difference between suits, on a surface inspection (there's a huge one on more than that) but a tie can be a statement. In my advertising career I took a lot of pleasure in wearing extremely conservative (albeit well cut) suits, with spectacularly flagrant ties and suspenders. This coupled with my habit of taking off my jacket and rolling up my monogrammed sleeves (to expose my ancient tattoo) and using language that would make a drunken longshoreman blush, was a part of making me a ton of money in the business. Until I simply couldnt stand it anymore.

The right tie can look very sexy on a well dressed man.

Too much like a noose at times...

Sigh. Alas. What're ya gonna do? I'd prefer never to button the top button of my shirt--it's just plain uncomfortable--but the fashion gods have made this an unbreakable rule: if you're going to wear a suit, you should wear a tie. It's accepted custom, and if you don't want to be viewed as a Philistine, you've got to get with the program. Besides, it's a nice look.

I don't like ties, never did. They just bother me!

With a nice shirt and coat,or with a suit you bet, with my oversizes tee shirts, no.

I wore one once, and hated it.

Indispensable for business or formal occasions. Tough to wear on hot humid days though. Walk around DC (where ties are practically required apparel) in the summer and take a look at the overweight bureaucrats and pols in their sweat-soaked $1000 dollar suits; it's not a pretty sight...

If you want respect, you must wear a tie. Otherwise people think you are some type of dilettante and not serious.

Only for work. However--in the corporate environment, which is my weekday life, I've noticed that people listen more to what I'm saying when I wear a tie. You can wear t-shirts in your 20s, but don't try that for too long after that. If you run a department no one will take you seriously unless you dress for people's expectations. We may not like it, but it's a reality.

Only for weddings or funerals.Read my lips: I don't wear no monkey-suit.
