 | callitdowntheline75 (53) 05/15/2008 | I have had fellow teachers who were/are excessive brown-nosers, but it was also because the principal literally demanded it (this man was an egomaniac to the nth degree). What I had a problem with is that this excessive brown-nosing often resulted in teachers and employees snitching against each other just so they could get on the good side of this egomaniac principal. You could not even say a bad word or make any criticisms against this man for fear that you would suffer dire consequences (no joke). For me, I like giving compliments if and when the time calls for it, and make critiques when things are askew. But I'm not willing to stroke someone's ego and sell myself (at the expense of others) just to get ahead. I still want to maintain a sense of pride and dignity, if I have little else to offer.

 | abichara (60) 05/29/2006 | That's just human nature. People kiss up to those in power to get ahead. Personally, I prefer to be judged on the basis of the my work. For me, it's simply a matter of pride in myself. Even if I don't get ahead as fast, I prefer to be honest with myself. I have little tolerance for those types of workplace games.

 | Gentle Jude (23) 11/25/2005 | Sometimes, especially on your first day and in interviews, a bit of brown nosing doesn't hurt, just as long as it isn't sick sweet or insincere. I think I would rather someone suck up to me then be horrible to me. But doing this too much, people will think you are a fool and will actually feel either yucky around you, or will be angry with you.

 | kamylienne (77) 11/24/2005 | The word "excessive" is unneccessary here; I'm all for treating people with due respect, don't get me wrong. But it's nauseating to see people honestly suck up to their bosses.
