I agree not country at all. Though No One in Country has any credibility for knocking him  given all the white trash cheese coming out of  Nashville in the last 15 years. He is a folky just ask Peter Paul and Mary who had such huge success with his Leaving on a Jet Plane . He certainly entertained  the tail end of the Boomer generation in the 70s. If you want one of the best Chritmas Albums for your kids try John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together. My favorite song of his is Fly Away.  Rocker?  well more so than rappers but truly no.  He was gifted however and deserves respect. Charlie Rich was a one hit wonder and barely that!!

If it was up to me, he wouldn't be in the country hall of fame either. He just wasn't that good. I don't know how he ever managed to win entertainer of the year. But the clip of Charlie Rich burning the envelope after reading Denver's name is one of my favorites.
