The modern "war on terror" may very well be the product of the compromises we made during the cold war. And the alliances we are making now, with countries like Pakistand and Saudi Arabia, may very well bite us in the ass in a couple of decades if not sooner.
Secondly, by supporting thugs we turn their opponents against us. By supporting even benign dictatorships we tell the world that our rights are more important than theirs.
Most importantly, we should be standing up for the democratic values we profess.

We should only give aid when in our national interest. If the ruler is a duke, dictator, or John Kerry, we should give aid if it helps America!
