I think most people realize the truth about Santa on their own before somebody has to tell them about it. Even if somebody still believes in the Santa myth longer than most, its still a fun thing to play along with. Anybody who feels the need to "expose" the Santa conspiracy is a true Scrooge.

Why? Let them enjoy their childhood.

Why as a parent would I feel the need to destroy a cherished childhood tradition that is harmless in the name of "truth". Let the kids believe in santa and elves and the easter bunny or whatever. They grow up way fast as it is let them injoy the magic of being young.

Strangely, my parents never tried to tell me Santa was real when I was a little kid. They said it was because they believed in teaching honesty at an early age. But I think it was because they wanted to take credit for buying the presents!

What truth about Santa?

I remember leaving a tooth under my pillow, and seeing no money under my pillow the next day. I seen a note on the kitchen table that said the tooth fairy does not get paid till Friday! It took me years to figure that one out.

Santa Claus exists. Telling the kids that they aren't come about 11 or 12 is just part of the plan between the Parental-Kringle Accord of 1866.

I recall the days of my belief in Santa Claus as some of the most exciting of my life. That period of wonder lasts such a short time - why on earth would you want to cut it short? Kids figure it out for themselves soon enough so let them believe and allow yourself the enjoyment of seeing the magic in their eyes.

What about Santa? Is he hurt? Did he die? There was nothing on the news about it. Great, now I won't be able to sleep....

My dad actually cried while he told me the truth about Santa because he wanted me to believe in him for as long as I wanted (he grew up in the 50s and 60s when Santa was popular). The both of us cried because I wanted so much to believe in Santa, myself. My mom had been at my dad for years to tell me "the truth," so to speak. Technically, there was a Santa Claus, however, he was a gift-giver known as St. Nicholas (he's the paton saint of kids) who allegedly gave dowry to three daughters of a poor peasant (so that they could be married off instead of forced into prostitution) and also allegedly gave presents to good Christian children and nothing to the naughty brats.
