After several cookie-cutter musicals at Warner Bros. Doris was chosen for this MGM extravaganza. Leaving behind her girl-next-door image, she portrays a sexy, career-driven torch singer in a dysfunctional relationship with a Chicago gangster.

this was a pretty well made biography on Ruth Etting. Doris Day was a good choice for this role considering she can handle both the acting and singing. James Cagney was also great as the bully of a man who got her career started and then married her.
