The guy was practically a gangster late in life.

A good singer, yes, but...hero? To call Sinatra a hero makes the word meaningless.

I'm going to rate him a little higher than most other reviewers for 2 reasons. Sinatra did a lot of annonymous charity work but not always in the traditional sense. If he was visiting someone in the hospital and the person sharing the room with his friend was in financial trouble, Sinatra would annonymously pay the hospital bill, even though the person in need was just an ordinary man or woman and not a celebrity. Also he should rate higher for singlhandedly ending racial segregation in Las Vegas. During the days of the Rat Pack, Sammy Davis Jr was told that he could not stay at the hotel where he and Sinatra were appearing. Sinatra said to the hotel manager "If he doesn't stay here, I don't sing here." That single phrase immediately ended segregation for celebrities and eventually ended segregation for paying guests as well, several years before the civil rights act became the law of the land.

A great talent and American icon yes. Hero is not the right word for him.

American Icon, Yes. American Hero is a stretch. But Hey, anyone who could score all the classy broads that he did is a hero in certain peoples' eyes.

Might have been a fun guy to party with, but hardly a hero.

Not a hero by any definition of the word. UPDATE: What, I can't go on record to say that there have been better Americans than this guy?
