Admireable for more than baseball because he gave up some of his prime physical years as an athlete to serve our country during time of war.

Let me start by saying I'm a huge fan of this guy, and I believe he was the best hitter who ever played baseball. (And I'm willing to bore you to death trying to prove it too) I give him a lot of credit for his service as a combat pilot, and for giving up a big chunk of a legendary career to do so. However, I wouldn't feel comfortable elevating him over the thousands of men who gave up big chunks of their lives, or all of their lives to do the same thing. And you know what? From what I've read, neither would he.
