This is basically a war movie, though a very unorthodox one-two officers in Napoleon's army (Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine) carry on a duel that goes on for 20 years across the battlefields of the Napoleon Wars. An interesting allegory, good acting, and as well-filmed as Scott's later efforts.

The ability of a young Mr.Scott to capture innate characteristics in each of the main characters is outstanding. The maintenance of a coherent story through it all is really satisfying. This is simply the best movie I've ever seen.
