I don't know what rating I'd give him if he were still alive today, but I'm sure it would be higher than the rating I'd give Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton.

Terrible because I think King is something else beyond our little overrated definitions of 'left' and 'right'. . .he was a powerful 20th century force who was cut down before his time. . .he had eloquent arguments for whatever political disposition you choose. . .his arguments are above the plain of political and go into the realm of philosophical and spiritual. . .give this list a rest. . .

Was leftist, but all things considered, well, that is not something I will hang him for.Spoke for the voiceless and powerless.

Well, I feel compelled to respond to jaywilton, because there are quite a few misconceptions about MLK. Pols who hated him when he was alive sung his praises when he was dead and safe, and when it was politically expedient. We're given an image of a man who was color blind, and that's not necessarily true. Moreover, he was leftist to the core, and by today's standards he would be considered extreme left. Although the term wasn't coined yet, he did support the concept of affirmative action, notwithstanding the claims of AA opponents that he was "colorblind." He vehemently opposed the Viet Nam war, which earned him angry rants against him to which he would respond, "there is something strangely inconsistant about a nation and a press who would praise you for saying be nonviolent to Bull Conner but curse and damn you when you say be nonviolent to little brown Viet Namese children." He was also very critical of the capitalist system, and some of his lesser known but more militant speeches were made when he supported the garbage workers' strike in Chicago. Some point out the coincidence that he was killed just as he was beginning to address issues of class and draw working class white people into his fold. If he were alive today, he would be pushing the Democrats from the left.

A fearless man and a great public speaker. He gave his life trying to achieve his dream of racial equality.May his sacrifice never be in vain.

If he defined "liberalism" today,I'd still think of myself as one.
