He hit harder than any player of his day, and harder than most since his day, and he wasn't shy about bragging about it. He played clean, though, and his violence was within the rules of the game and accepted risk of his opponents. Yes, I know he put Darryl Stingley in a wheelchair, but it was a clean hit, obvious to anyone who saw it, and obvious to Stingley.
