 | edt4 (99) 12/19/2005 | I thought it was a bit over-the-top when I first saw it (when limbs get severed in this movie, the wounds gush copious amounts not only of blood but what looks like milk) but it was undeniably effective and I grudgingly ended up liking it (my friend, who saw it with me, ended up getting a migraine). Sort of a low-budget blending of George Romero's zombie-mythology, Italian comic-book horror and an H.P. Lovecraft fever-dream, there's not much in the way of a plot, but plenty of gruesome atmosphere and inspired nightmare imagery, and if you like horror films that pack a real visceral wallop, then this is for you. I'm always heartened by film-makers who are able to get a lot of creative and imaginative mileage out of a minimal budget, and this one succeeds most admirably. The subsequent films in the series veered quickly towards tongue-in-cheek comedy (not really my cup of tea), but this first entry is pretty intense and (be warned) very bloody. Not a film to watch by yourself late at night if you're at all squeamish.
