I had a great deal in the first grade. There was this Chinese immigrant classmate who wanted American lunches, probably to fit in with everyone else. His mother would fix him these amazing Chinese meals, and I've always thought the Chinese are the best cooks in the world. I would give him my PB Sandwich, fruit, drink, and dessert (he was amazed that I through in dessert when he didn't have one to offer - but Ho Hos just didn't go with good dim sum) and he would give me his shrimp dumplings, noodles, and soup (actually, it was different each day). Each of us felt like we were getting the better deal. It was win-win. Man, I wish he was around to swap lunches today!

Swapping lunches was fairly commonplace, as was outright stealing.

It's so un-democratic. . .although a good (but tough) real-life lesson about taking care of one's turf. ..
