I'm sorry, have we met before? Oh yes, of course, you were my best friend in University! Good times, good times. Welcome to your 40's, when you can't remember where you put glasses and you can't find them because you're not wearing your glasses. Don't worry kids, you'll adapt. You put a strap on your glasses so you don't put them down.

It's happened only once to me, and it was one of the scariest things. Not to KNOW, or to question something like that quickly leads to questioning ones very own sanity (which I've also questioned). I wish that on no one, and hope that it doesn't happen to me again either.

Actually -- *can* we? What we *think* we remember often does not match up very well with what actually happened. Our memories are creative, because storage space in the brain is not unlimited: it often fills in details that were never there. There's some interesting current research on this. Sparks is right, and for exactly this reason--we believe we remember things that did not happen, or exactly the way we think they did.

I work in the mental health field, where many of our clients are extremely poor historians. Intake interviews can sometimes be entirely useless, as the information provided is often conflicting, contradictory or else completely nonsensical. If I couldn't trust my own memories my identity would likely be altered beyond recognition, or perhaps, completely wiped-out. Not a pleasant thought to contemplate, which should give those who do have sound mental health all the more compassion for those who don't.
