You could just as well ask why you have either term in the first place. Here in England, neither "back east" nor "out west" seems well heard of....

Yeah, but you are from "back East" or "out West". I guess then you could ask why it isn't "front East" or "forth East", or "in West".

This is pretty funny. Im from "the north" being from PA. This was true when I lived in Oklahoma and is true now being in TN....I have quite a few friends from California. They are NOT from the west...they are from California!
