It is amazing how mankind has learned over the millennia how things work. I suppose it was in the Fertile Crescent, where they made bricks, that someone got the bright idea to slap a little mud in between the bricks to keep the wind from blowing through. Then some bright guy wondered what else could be done, and there you go.
