 | traderboy (25) 01/31/2006 | Award-winning title, but it's not the spine-tingling chiller you'd end up expecting. This 1989 respite-from-horror is what Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS would've looked like had it been taken over by The Foundlings or some other improv troupe; it's a straight comedy about a feminist professor hired by the government to coax the homicidal leader of a warrior tribe of women out of an uncharted jungle on the outskirts of San Bernadino to safeguard the nation's avacado supply. Silly? Sure is, and they made it work with people you'd ordinarily think incapable of doing the job. Former Playmate and long-time Gene Simmons paramour Shannon Tweed stars as Dr. Margo Hunt, who breaks from her university duties to undertake the mission (and drags along shapely college frat-toy Bunny for field-trip experience). Tweed needs a guide to get them through the rugged undertow, and lands the hilarious Bill Maher as a sexist "Indiana Jones" throwback (say what you will about Maher's political humor, but in this, he's a head-shaking laugh attack). They're soon captured by Top Pirahna Adrienne Barbeau, who threatens their lives while forcing everyone to wear skimpy costumes. The plot thins from there, but try not to notice; just marvel at the exchanges between Maher and the ladies, Maher's ruination of the sensitive-male "Donnahew" tribe, and Tweed's luscious bare legs. If you see this available anywhere, there's no harm in taking it for a quick spin.
