Actually not that important of a holiday in Jewish tradition - elevated in the 20th century for the kids watching Christian kids celebrate Christmas. Updating once again to respond. It's starting to get annoying that khwyman doesn't actually read what I write. I did not say that Hannukah was made up to keep up with Christmas. I believe the word I used was "elevated." And until the 20th century, it was a relatively obscure holiday. It is nowhere near as important as Passover or the high holy days (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), and perhaps not as important as the Sukkot or Tu Bi-Shvat. The history of Hannukah is well documented, and if you really want to learn about it, talk to any practicing Jew, including the one I married.

Again with the skewing of history.... Let's set the record straight. The mennorah of Hannukkah is originally the lampstand of the Temple. There was a time when the city of Jerusalem was under seige and there was only enough enough oil to keep the lampstand of the Temple lit for a single night. God miraculously made that bit of oil be sufficient for 8 nights, and at the end of which the seige was broken. The Festival of Lights stems out of that event in Jewish history, and not from some attempt to keep up with Christmas. This holiday is right up with Passover in signifigance to Orthodox Jewish families, passed only perhaps by Rosh Hashonah (pardon my spelling) and Yom Kippur.
