The greatest player never to win the World Cup. Played mercurial football at a time when British Isles football was considered thuggish relative to Italy or Spain.
Americans should watch his highlights as they would rapidly realize the beauty of the game. Have a look...

Pele good,Maradonna better, George always the BEST. Pele got more fame than he deserves, all you have to do is watch Bestie and see the dribbles, speed, goals, he made the game fun and interesting, Pele was boring---

George Best, whom I had the privilege of seeing playing for Manchester United in 1966, was in my opinion the most talented footballer to have been born in the British Isles. The Northern Irish genius, who sadly died in november, 2005, had a talent that most modern day players only dream of. Best (and how apt a surname he had)was known as the fifth Beatle, in light of his Beatle-esque mop-top haircut and also in part to his youthful good looks and celebrity status during the sixties. He could turn defences inside out at will with his mesmerising dribbling skills and was equally adept at shooting with his right or left foot. He single-handedly destroyed Portuguese champions Benfica during a European Cup tie played in Lisbon in 1965, bamboozling their defence with his pace and brilliant ball control. Sadly for Best (and for us) his off field problems (he was an alcoholic)saw him bow out of top level professional football earlier than he should have. During the sixties, George Best was at the height of his powers. The great Brazilian footballing icon, Pele, said at the time, that Best was the most gifted footballer on the planet. No better accolade could he have asked for.
