 | EschewObfuscation (66) 12/28/2005 | I made a big mistake here once. Back in '99, I went to Ireland with my youngest daughter (she was in a big step-dancing competition) and I had received a tidy bonus check three days before departure. The trip had been budgeted appropriately, perhaps frugally, until I got that check. Suddenly, I morphed into a drunken sailor.
I bought souvenirs, I bought jewelry, I bought crystal and shipped it home. Foolishly, I entered this duty free shop with a couple hundred left. Wisely, they had Guinness, Smythwick's and a few others I've since forgotten (imagine that?) in stock, ready for transport across the pond. Changing planes and terminals in Boston, I had to drag (literally) my booty for about six and a half miles, in just about 45 seconds, barely making our connecting flight. Naturally, the final leg of our 18 hour journey featured the worst turbulence I've ever experienced and I was wishing I could access the cargo hold (because how much worse could it be?) and break into my stash, but it certainly would have been a fine waste of good Irish beer, had I been able to.
They probably don't remember but I was on a first name basis with the entire duty-free staff, not to mention a battalion of bartenders (from my 10 day stay) all named Mickey, Seamus and Patrick.

 | Sundiszno (30) 12/27/2005 | I'm not normally a big-time duty-free shopper, but I was impressed by the variety of items at Shannon's duty free shop, and the generally reasonable prices. I found a number of last-minute items there that I had not seen anywhere else in my travels in Ireland. Had I known what was to be had there, I might have bought less on the "outside" and more at Shannon.
