 | twansalem (36) 09/07/2007 | Good idea, but will never actually happen. Good or bad, we Americans are stubborn people. It's probably not worth the effort to try. I'm pretty used to the English system of measurement, but I have to admit that its much easier to do conversions and calculations with the metric system. Powers of ten are much easier than memorizing somewhat random numbers.

Short term would be a nightmare in the U.S. I remember the problems when Canada went metric.

 | FranksWildYears (48) 01/04/2006 | I think the topic is perhaps stated a little strongly, All Nations Must Use The Metric System, but it really is a lot easier to quickly calculate and express things in a base 10 system. As someone who grew up using Imperial weights and measures and then switched to metric in my late teens when Canada converted, I can attest that it was easy to learn and not the horrific social and economic burden it was made out to be. My father who was probably in his mid 40's when it happened had a little more trouble converting, but managed it. My grand parents never adapted. My sister-in-law who moved to the U.S. as an adult had no problem switching back to Imperial Measurement. We monkeys are capable of learning. There are still vestiges of the old system used in Canada. Everyone expresses their body weight in pounds, and you often hear people flipping back and forth between expressing measurements in inches and cetimetres. Our football fields are still 110 yards long.

 | Sundiszno (30) 01/03/2006 | I'm sure someone out there will correct my "facts", but if memory serves me correctly, not too many years back (no more than 20), the Congress actually passed a law calling for the US to adopt the metric system. Well, we can all see how heartily and seriously we embraced that proposal. I do think that it would be beneficial for us to get on the metric bandwagon. Maybe we could work a deal with the Britsh whereby they would change over from driving on the left to the right, and we'd switch from feet/inches/pounds to meters and kilos (if anyone thinks I'm serious about that, they had too much to drink over the holidays and are still suffering the residual effects).

 | Paolo (7) 01/02/2006 | On the one hand it makes more sense then our current system. However, even if we did make the metric system universal, we would be subjecting us (and other nations that dont use the metric system) to short term inconveniences. The long term outcome might be reduced frustration and inconvenience, stuff that is rather weak compared to all the strife in the present day world. This is definately not paramount...and almost makes me think that the long term advantage doesnt counter the short term disadvantage

 | jamestkirk (23) 01/02/2006 | Except the United States. Leave my pounds, inches, feet, and yards alone.

 | Underspin (24) 12/31/2005 | It IS really odd that in the year 2006 the U.S. contnues to utilize its own unique measurement/weight system, especially when considering the metric system is a far more logical and systematic methodology (i.e., every unit is divided into tens, hundreds, thousands)...not that I completely understand it yet!

 | MariusQelDroma (36) 12/30/2005 | Metric or English, measurements matter not when people starve and riot about it in various places. Zero bussels and zero cubic meters of food still means the same: no food. Bicker about more important stuff for a change.

 | SZinHonshu (44) 12/29/2005 | What?!? Blasphemy!!!
By adopting the metric system the United States would be ignoring its God given obligation to jam our way of life down the throats of the rest of the world.
