Easton, PA 1

A dump occupied with a crossculture of Hillbillies/factory people.

I've never been there-but any place where the Easton Assasin(Larry Holmes)is the only thing I know about the place...can't be all good.

For reasons that I just can't rationally or coherently explain, Pennsylvania has always creeped me out. Its towns, villages and cities are like the towns, villages and cities from one of the creepier episodes of "The Twilight Zone" but without the charm. Years ago, I learned that Jayne Mansfield was buried in a very small town in PA, and I decided to try and find it (I'm an amateur cemetery buff...I know, I know-- my friends and family think its an odd hobby too). Crossing the NJ border, I entered Easton. Not out-and-out depressing, or markedly seedy, I suppose, but not bustling or thriving either. Sort of seemed like a place that had seen its last "good days" in the 1940's, maybe (or maybe the 1920's). I actually found a combination cafe-bookstore on one of its main streets that was interesting, and the few times I've returned to Easton in subsequent years, it's to visit that store (and, yes, I did find Jayne's final resting place; she's buried in Pen Argyl, a small town about 30 miles or so above Easton...her grave is marked by a heart-shaped marble slab). So far as I know, there's not much else to draw tourists to this small city, unless its an interest in Lafayette College or a curiosity about how crayons are manufactured at the nearby Crayola Factory. Or wanting to visit Larry Holmes' birthplace. It's also not a far drive from Bethlehem, which does exert a certain frayed charm all its own, despite being located in PA. Or Allentown, which is as depressing and uninspiring as the music of Billy Joel is.

Allentown's ghetto has nothing on Easton.

Easton has a good vibe since it is right outside of Jersey and 76 miles from NY. There's always an influx of people coming in and out for business. The NYers who have moved to Easton have established a pretty good arts scene. There exist a lot of galleries. The city has a lot of nice old historic houses. It is also the home of Boxing Champ Larry Holmes. He has done a lot for the city in terms of redevelopment. On the downside a lot of people from Easton are ignorant clutzes! If you can ignore some of the wackos who live in Easton you'll be alright.
