The hands apart stance was not particularly uncommon in the early years of the 20th century, but Cobb made it an art form, allowing him to shift one hand up or down depending on what the pitch was and what he wanted to do with it. Contrary to some beliefs, he did not make contact with his hands apart (except when bunting of course)
