A disc big enough to carve a turkey on, played in an artifact that took up half your living room and was incompatible with most TV's, and cost about as much as a good used car

Can't imagine how this didn't take off.

The size wasn't right...

. . . I thought these have quickly went the way of the 8-track tape, with a much shorter life span.  DVDs have replaced these, which are much more compact and reliable than their Laser Disc predecessors (my uncle had one, and during the middle of the movie it would stop and he'd have to flip the disc over).  Unless it has an industrial use that I'm not aware of, I think this one's pretty extinct.
