DVD players are a really good invention because no one makes VHS tapes anymore. You get a better viewing quality with them. Although you could live without it, you probably wouldn't want to.

DVD players making life simple since they let you play movies by simply inserting a DVD. The advantage over VCR is that DVD are lighter, cheaper, and easier to copy. However, DVD players cannot play VHS tapes making your previous movie collection of VHS tapes obsolete.

I like watching DVDs for the director commentary -- otherwise I'd rather just download movies or watch them on cable and have no physical representation at all.

Pretty good in general, but the DVD also lost a few of the good qualities of cassettes, including the ease with which they can be queued up, as well as the capacity to record.

It's a much better alternative to having those big clunky VCR's and VHS tapes.
