However, I saw for myself some people will always associate oatmeal with kid-dom no matter how old they get. Back in the mid 1980s I worked for a guy named Gregg who was about 27 years old at that time. One morning I showed up at his house to give him a ride to work. He had recently married and his wife was now making the breakfasts for them. Gregg and I were sitting at the kitchen table and his wife brought over a bowl of oatmeal and placed it in front of him. He sat there for about 15 seconds and just stared at it. I saw his eyes glaze over as his mind went deep into thought. Then his mouth opened wide, he lit up like a Christmas tree, raised his eyebrows, put a big smile on his face and said "Oh! I know what to do with this!" and he grabbed a pitcher of milk and a bowl of sugar and proceeded to turn his healthy oatmeal into a milky sugary substance. He then devoured it in about 10 huge spoonfuls, making noises in his throat meaning "Oh man this is good......I haven't had this stuff in years." I sat back and watched him scarf the oatmeal down and thought to myself "This guy had a good childhood." The ad agencies can try to convince us oatmeal is healthy, nutritious, and a good value for the dollar, but there are some folks who will always associate it with being a kid and say "health and nutrition be damned," pour on the milk and sugar, and put a warm piece of their childhood back in their tummy.
