Giving this five stars because there really aren't very many of these people. Fact is, most homeless work for a living, about 1/3 of them full time. It's much more complicated than righteous middle class folk often want to think.

Ridgewalker...you tell 'em! Hey, it's even scriptural. If a man won't work, don't feed them. Even the apostles worked for a living. They never mooched off anyone.

I think most of these homeless people are either addicted to drugs or alcohol. I dont think life is too hard if you stay clean. If you stay clean, you have the motivation to keep working. Even though i only deliver newspapers, i always show up and do my job everyday. Sometimes i wish i could be fired. Ive been in the same business for 18 years. Its not that hard for me since im not addicted to drugs or alcohol. After seeing people i know addicted with no motivation, im starting to think im thankful for staying clean.

As hard as it is for some of us to imagine - some people actually DO choose to live this way. How can you really pity that particular faction of the homeless if it's their conscious choice?

I think about half of homeless folks fit this mold. They have given up on the system and have found enough reasons to be satisfied with survival. When you hear that the national average of what homeless people are bringing in from panhadling (two years ago it was almost 30 grand a year)why shouldn't they!? Yes it is again us dumb/naive Americans who perpetuate this problem by "feeling sorry for them". You might want to think about that next time the guy with dirty pance on and new Nikes and prescription eye glasses askes you for your change. If it were my decision each one would have a psych evaluation done and after finding them "able bodied and of sound mind" you tell them get a job or throw 'em into the prison work program. At least then they are helping to feed/support the rest of the bottom feeders of society. If were going to pay them I'd rather pay to have them out of my way instead of paying for them and having them stink up another street corner close to my home.
