Children are curious, and that's a fact. They're going to look at whatever they see. If a mother with small children leaves a piston in her purse, she should leave her purse in a place where the child won't be able to reach it.

Again, compassion yes. But the stupidity of keeping a loaded gun where any child can easily access it is beyond measure.

I don't like the way this is phrased- "deserve" as a concept is overrated. . .no kid 'deserves' to go out like this and no mother 'deserves' my sympathy any more than my scorn or hatred. This is a terrible accident. Personally, I don't own a gun (I like the idea of an armed citizenry) but if you keep one in the house with kids, you live with the one-in-a-million-shot this could happen. (Although kid-deaths through other means probably outweigh pistols) Then again, don't you want to reduce risk?

Obviously, I feel the most compassion for the kid. For me, it depends upon the circumstances with which the child aquired the gun. If he/she broke open a lock box to get it you can't blame the parents. If, however, he/she broke open a shoe box to get it, the parents should be shackled off to the big house.

I was licensed to carry a fire arm since since my son was about two years old. Once, when he was about 12, his dad and I decided it was ok to go out and leave him with a friend in the house. Dad said, "what are you worried about the gun for? It's locked in the safe, unloaded, and, you're the only one with a key." Voice mail from God told me I should come home early anyway. When I got there the first thing I noticed was the box had been tampered with. Thank God, he couldn't get it open, but he was told numorous times not to ever mess with guns. I asked him why he would even try to get it out. He said he wanted to show it to his friend. He wanted to go out hunting the next deer season and I told him because of his mistake of wanting to show off, he'd have to wait till the following year.

I gotta say that the parents who make these mistakes are already punished enough by the tradgedy of losing a child or having the child maimed or crippled for life, But in the case I read about that was in the news I could not feel sorry for this woman. She was a ghetto minded ignorant woman who you knew was living a lifestyle where guns were outwardly just a part of their home and attitudes. Thugs. People like this should not have kids in the first place.

this happens to moms and dads. they have a loaded gun in the house where the child finds it they play with it point it at someone the gun goes off and tragedy. We hear it enough in the news. i feel bad for them they are now without a child or their child killed someone else. what a horrible lesson to learn.

Even though I know this is a stupid thing to do, I know people do stupid things and make mistakes. I heard a story of a woman who wasn't paying close attention to her daughter and her daughter kept asking question after question. Well they came to an intersection while walking and her young daughter asked if she could go ahead and walk and her mother not really listening said yes. Her daughter was hit by a car and killed. She did not mean for her daughter to be killed obviously, but she made a mistake, a grave mistake! The woman will be tormented by this error in judgment for the rest of her life. How sad!

Stupid people doing stupid things with guns get no breaks with me. I've been handling firearms for 15 years and have never had a negligent discharge.
