 | Randyman (104) 03/02/2007 | As far as the fight is concerned, this was a good old fashioned asswhuppin', with Louis doing the whuppin', stopping Schmeling in 124 seconds of the first round and avenging his earlier KO loss to Schmeling and winning the World Heavyweight Title. The events surrounding the fight (due to Schmeling's connections to Germany's Nazi party and his closeness to Adolph Hitler) elevated it to a much higher level and put it in the class of Jesse Owns four Olympic medals, maybe even higher. The only other heavyweight fight that ever recieved this much attention prior to the fight was Frazier-Ali 1. Oddly enough one fight united the country and the other somewhat devided it along racial lines. Not a great fight, but it was a great victory, for Louis and America.
