About a 3, a journeyman with the Reds and in the minors in the 1910's, he got a chance with St. Louis at the end of that decade. He was one of the first guys to take advantage of the lively ball with the Browns. Benefitted greatly from his home park, in his best year , 1922, he hit only 290 with 7 homers on the road, but hit .373 with 32 homers at home. Overall, 332 with 39 homers and 155 Rbi's overall to lead the league, though in fairness Ruth missed a lot of time and had a bad year by Ruth standards anyway. Had quite a few years in the 20's in which he was up there among the homer and slugging% leaders. Though a mediocre fielder, he was fast, and also stole 37 bases in that '22 season, making him the 1st 30/30 player. Later played at the end of his career in the late 20's with some dreadful Red Sox teams. Although not as great as he might appear, considering the numbers that he put up were in a hitter's park in a hitter's era, he was certainly a good player, and had he not really got established until he was 29, making him a late bloomer, he may have made The Hall eventually. One of the most fascinating players of the time, though relatively obscure to most fans today.
