Ataturk was a genius who still is commemorated in Turkey.  Most Turkish currency, coins and stamps even today have Ataturk sterning gazing at the Turkish scene.

His military prowess made the modern Turkish state.

His statecraft still holds sway today although rising Mohammedan fanaticism is making an increasing threat.

Ataturk was an atheist who insisted on the ascendency of the civil over the religious in the Middle East.  Such an attitude is hard to swallow in that area, and has made little headway in the Levant and across the Middle East.
