I am with SharonParry that shot gun wedding usually means being forced to get married when a woman finds out she is pregnant. Back in the late 50s when I was born this would have been true for sure. Back then single parents would have been shunned. I still hear this phrase being said when someone gets married after they find out they are pregnant.

Now, I'm not sure, but, I think people use this to describe a wedding that takes place shortly after the couple finds out they're about to have a child. If I'm wrong, please, someone correct me.
