One is to focus on technological development, and the other is to study the evolution of the means by which we study and interpret the universe. The Greeks actually viewed science as a detriment to truth, rejecting the experimentation of the Ionians because they believed the physical universe was flawed, and the truth hiding behind it in absolute perfection. Made them excellent at mathematics, but horrible at physics.
Read the chapter in Sagan's Cosmos entitled "The Backbone of Night," for a great account of the Ionians and the origin of the term "cosmopolitan."
