Christianity as we know it according to the word of God, started when Jesus laid down his life that we might live. Without his sacrificial death and rising from the dead, we would not have salvation and thus the Christian church would not be established. We would therefore still be under the old law!!!! I respectfully ask that people look into the Gospels to gain clear understanding. (Even the prophecies laid down in the Old Testament.)

Please understand that this comment is from a christian!

This could and should be a first class subject even though it is very broad for a standard semester. Our entire world emanates or even proceeds from Christianity and it is crucial to modern society.

Potentially doubly powerful because you can approach it as both faith and history if you are a Christian and as a historian if you're not, and it touches on not only theology, but wars, biography, the emergence of new ideas, literature, art, heroism, intrigue, geography, etc. While the histories of the major branches of this belief system are highly interesting, I most enjoy reading about the first 500 years or so, especially interested in whose ideas didn't survive and what groups- whether one considers them heretics or not were once prevalent but are now almost forgotten. I especially like reading about figures who- like them or not- were highly original, such as the great writer/ philosopher/ theologian Origen, who has some bizarre but fascinating theories and concepts that are highly engaging...I also like reading about where it spread and why, and Chrisianity's relationship to Roman society and history, the Jewish religion, and the histories of ancient areas in what's now The Middle East.

Considering that it changed the face of western civilization, it would be good to know something about it.
