The Illinois Legislature used to be elected by cumulative vote and many corporations use it. The voter is given as many votes as there are candidates to be elected. The voter can distribute those votes among the candidates in any manner the voter wishes. Let's say five candidates are to be elected. The voter gets five votes. The voter can give one vote to each candidate, five votes to one candidate, three votes to one and two votes to another, etc. (Add picture)

This method is often used in corporation board of directors elections, and the State of Illinois used it for decades to elect the lower house of the Illinois Legislature. I think the system was changed in the 1970's.

The state was divided into districts and each district elected three representatives. Each elector had three votes. They could give one vote to each of three candidates, or three votes to one candidate or if you only voted for two candidates, you were in effect giving 1.5 votes to each candidate.

As a result each district usually elected legislators of both political parties. The Chicago Machine, however, was able to stick the GOP with shills put up by the Chicago Machine. This horsed up the GOP caucus in Springfield and with one-man, one vote court decisions, the system was eventually eliminate.
