You had to be a great general to defeat the mighty Hannibal, and this guy did just that. Much of southern Italy was under Hannibal's control, and he had not only humiliated the Roman army on several occasions despite being heavily outnumbered, and proved to be intractable in the land for years, he had threatened the city itself. Africanus defeated him and enforced a settlement that greatly weakened Carthage.
