It is not unusual. We tend to think faster than we can talk, and our thoughts sometime go too fast and we lose the trail. Not to mention that even a minor distraction can break the thinking process and leave us with an incomplete sentence or even word. Hey, that's how we are wired, what can we do :)

Yes, my train of thought often derails, particularly when I witness something bizarre in mid-conversation.

when I have a whole bunch going on it is so easy to get lost in mid thought.I feel like the absent minded professor sometimes. It is like what was I saying as if the person I was talking to can tell me. I feel like a real ditz when I do this.

I have to admit, I do this quite often. When I'm around close friends and co-workers it's not so bad, I can laugh it off, but when I'm speaking with someone that I'm not so familiar with, especially in a professional enviorment, it can be pretty embarrassing. Kind of makes me feel senile, but I know I'm not alone.
