I passed through Donaueschingen once, sometime in the mid-1970s. Went out of my way just to see the source of the Danube. As I recall, what is billed locally as the source of the Danube is a fountain behind some protective iron grillwork. Anyway, if you are in the area, it's worth it to say that yhou have seen the source of the Danube.

Donaueschingen lies on the Baar plateau in the southern Black Forest. The confluence of the Brigach and Breg form the source of the Danube river from which the city gets its name. "Donau" is German for "Danube." The town is very old being mentioned in 889. The Hapsburgs controlled it and gave it to Heinrich von Fürstenberg. The right to brew beer was also connected with this grant. This is the source of the Royal Fürstenberg Brewery. In 2003 the town had a little over 21,000 people.
